LOS ANGELES, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- American horror movie "It" opened to a monster 51-million-U.S.-dollar Friday, crushing numerous records in North American box office.
The movie is based on renowned horror writer Stephen King's 1986 novel of the same name. Directed by Andy Muschietti and made for around 35 million U.S. dollars, "It" stars Bill Skarsgard as the evil clown Pennywise. The movie tells the story of seven children in Derry, Maine, who are terrorized by the eponymous being.
"Luckily, a huge and potentially record setting September weekend is on tap later this week when Warner Bros. unleashes 'It' at the multiplex," wrote movie analyst Paul Dergarabedian at comScore in an email to Xinhua.
Produced by New Line Cinema, KatzSmith Productions, Lin Pictures and Vertigo Entertainment, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, this Friday is going to be the best opening day ever for an R-rated and horror title. "It" brought in an estimated 51 million U.S. dollars on Friday, which included 13.5 million U.S. dollars from Thursday night previews.
It's also the biggest opening ever for the month of September in North America and the biggest opening for a Stephen King movie. The movie's Friday take alone was bigger than the previous September crown holder, "Hotel Transylvania 2," which pulled in 48.5 million U.S. dollars for the three days in 2015, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The former record for an R-rated horror movie opening weekend was "The Conjuring," with its 41 million U.S. debut in 2013 and the former biggest opening for a Stephen King movie was the psychological horror movie "1408" with 20.6 million U.S. dollars in 2007.
