Tom was a boy in fifth grade who often got into trouble in his math class. He sat and talked, disrupted(扰乱)the class, and even fell asleep. He seemed disconnected in group activities. Most teachers would immediately write this student off as their problem child for the year and call it a day. However, his teacher, Miss Smith was different. She wanted to understand what was going on.
She did many activities in hopes of getting more information. She told the students that a competition between the boys and girls would take place in her class on each Friday with prizes (candy) for the winners.
The first week the students were greatly interested and listened carefully in her class. Everyone wanted to win. Interestingly enough, Tom had his hand up the whole time trying to get a turn. Yet, Miss Smith waited and waited. Finally she paired Tom in the competition against the best girl student in the class. As the teacher placed a question on the blackboard, most of the students began to shake their heads—this was a question they had never covered in class. Both the boy and the girl started slow... thinking of the answer to the question. Tom finished the difficult question just seconds before the girl and won the competition. The boys jumped out of their desk, cheering. Within the week the teacher had Tom out of her class and added to the middle-school academic games team. It turned out that Tom wasn't bad, he was bored!
Recognizing potential (潜力)is not always easy but the end results can be encouraging and surprising.
